We’ve all heard the horror stories about contractors from you-know-where, right? The good news is that my experiences mean I have a short list of contractors that I trust to always do good work. But even if you get a contractor recommendation directly from someone, it’s important to do due diligence before signing a contract.
Here are 5 questions you should ask before hiring a contractor:
What’s the estimated project timeline?
What are your working hours (what time will you start and end working each day)?
What is the payment schedule?
How do I contact you, and how long does it typically take to receive a response?
How do you protect the project site?
This is just a starting point, of course. You’ll also want to check out reviews and even ask the contractor if they can put you in contact with a few of their clients with jobs similar to yours so you can make the right decision.
Make sure that you keep records of your project and communications with the contractor. While the vast majority of contractors are great, documenting your job’s progress will offer you some measure of protection should something go wrong.
